I’m Still Here

Hey there! In case you were wondering what happened to me I’m still alive. I’ve just been super busy and totally forgot to post.
The two things taking up my time have been school and work. Yes, that’s right, I got a job! I’ll get to that in a sec.
School: With only three classes left in my current AA Degree program I’ve been jugging away at it. All three classes are math. One that I actually need and the other two being prerequisites for that class. I took one this summer, which ends this Thursday. So far I’ve got an A in the class. I’m not sure how I’ve done this. It mystifies me. Math has always been the bully that beats me up and takes my emotional and academic lunch money but this summer I seem to have figured out how to defeat it.

Of course that’s just the one class. The next one I have to take is going to be harder. Not only academically but also to get into. I tried to take it before, 4 times, but I kept having to bail on it half way through. So my reluctance to admit that maybe I wasn’t up to snuff and I needed to take the class before it has made it so that I have to petition to take this time around… now that I’m ready to. Hopefully I’ll be able to. If they won’t let me I’ll just go to a different college and then transfer it back because there’s no way I’m not going to get it done. Even if it means I have to take some convoluted route around the bureaucratic red tape.

After that I’ll be able to take the class I really need and then I will graduate in the Spring. Which feels weird since it’s taken me twelve years or so to finally get this far due to family and health issues and all sorts of other nonsense.

Work: As of July 7th I work at Macy’s as an on-call in the cosmetics department. Which is good since I create my own schedule and I’ve done similar work at the costume shop. My co-workers are super awesome and fun to work with and I’m guaranteed a pay check for my work which is nice. I also get commission on top of my hourly wage. So that’s a nice little bonus. I am finding it a bit hard to get into the swing of juggling work, school and a social life again but I’ll figure it out. It’s like riding a bicycle. You never really loose it you just forget it for a while.
Anyhoo, that’s it for me right now. I’ll try to have more goodies for you later.

I <3 Lou Reads the Internet or The Great Magnet Adventure

It’s been a while and I do apologize. I’ve been busy with school (kicking ass in my World Philosophers on Death class!! Go me! Ahem!) and thus have not had much time or presence of mind to write anything worth letting the entire internet read. So today’s is a very special edition.

Back Story:

My boyfriend, Tom, is a huge fan of Lou Reads the Internet For You. If you have never heard of it it’s a podcast where a lovely gent named Lou reads… well… the internet and records it. He often finds strange and somewhat unusual sites and forums to read from. Some are fetish forums, others are political forums… you get the idea. If you need more info check it out at http://loureads.com/  . I think you will be amused. I know I am. In fact I am also a huge fan. Anyways, I am going off on a tangent. That is loosly related to the title of this segment but… again I digress.

So Tom is a huge fan and he had downloaded the then most recent podcast and while looking at the picture that was used as the thumbnail he did a double take and then promptly messaged me.

“Did you ever do a vampire costume in a red dress?” He asked.

“Yes. Why?”

“I think Lou Reads used a picture of you for his latest pod cast.”

So I checked and low and behold… there I was… staring me right in the face. The picture that had been used was a picture of me in my Carmila costume. You remember that one. I posted about it a while back. So I decided to post a comment on the site.

Now some of you might think that I was all “Oh hell no! How dare you use a picture on me for a segment about a forum with people who actually think they’re vampires.” But… Really… I wasn’t. I was kind of flattered really and figured that Lou wasn’t implying that I thought I was a vampire of some such silliness like that. Later I received and email from him thanking me for being cool and offering both me and Tom magnets. With the caveat that we send him pictures of the magnets in their new home environment.

A few days later I received an envelope… handed to me by my very confused mother. And who could blame her… look at it…

I love this envelope. It makes me giggle every time I see it. I adored Lou before this and the fact he took the time to draw a picture on the envelope endured him even more to me… and I’ve never even met the guy.

As I said I’ve been busy. So I didn’t get the pictures of the magnets like I promised and I feel bad. So to make up for it the rest of the segment will be the pictures I’ve taken in my quest for the perfect spot for my Lou Reads the Internet For You magnet.

One would think that the refrigerator is the perfect place for a magnet but I am a rebel. I went with the hood above the stove for my first shot. The idea of cooking with Lou there to watch over my food like some weird internet guardian angel amused me.

My Magnet hanging out over the stove

But I thought… I could totally do better than this. So I moved on to some place else. A place one never sees or expects a magnet. The Bathroom!

Needless to say my family found this creepy and I worried for the magnets safety as I’m not sure how water resistant it is. So… onto the next unlikely place… the water heater!

I liked it but I decided to try it on another spot…

It was okay… but I still thought I hadn’t exahusted all my options. Though I did love the “WARNING” and the “FOR YOUR SAFETY READ BEFORE LIGHTING” stuff. So onto the next option… living things. For this I tried my nephew and my cats. On the off chance that one of them was metal. With disturbing results.

My nephew turned out to be a cyborg… and I’m sad to say that his grades have gone down since I introduced a magnet to his head. I’ve been told it’s not permanent.

Mama Kitty turns out to be a robot cat. Which explains all the pancakes ( If you dont’ get this joke please watch the video located here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i55yC-GcguU )

Dante as it turns out is not made of metal. But he really seemed to like the magnet. Once he relinquished it after his nap it was onto other options.

I placed the magnet by my bottle of Scotch but I felt kind of like I was being judged every time I went for a drink with Lou peeking out around the bottle so I decided to go with the one place that seemed like a natural spot.

I kind of like it on my white board the best. I should ask Lou if there are some good sites that can tell me where I can become a vampire and see if he has suggestions for the second part of the plan. The profit part is easy.

That’s it for my fangirly geekery with a magnet. I hope you enjoyed it. I know I did. My family just sort of stared at me and wondered why i was wandering a round with a magnet and taking pictures of it.

Diclaimer: No cats, robot cats, cyborgs, nephews, water heaters, bottles of booze, bath tubs, stoves or anything else was harmed in this adventure. If they had been I certainly wouldn’t have put photo documentation up on the internet >.>

Adventures in Job Hunting

The title of this post is rather misleading. In reality my job hunt over the past few months has not been very adventurous. Go to web site, fill out online application, click button, wait, not hear from company, lather, rinse, repeat. It’s very dull. It’s very discouraging. It’s very depressing.

This past two weeks I’ve sent in about nine applications. Which is roughly one application a day. Some would say I should be sending in about 9 a day but when you’re only two jobs ever have been retail as a sales clerk it’s very difficult to find anything. This is mainly because you share this trait with a good deal of the population. I’m very positive that I am not the only unemployed college student with a retail sales background running around on the internet trying to find a job. The other problem with this is being a student your schedule is kind of wonky. So all the non-students get snatched up first because they have completely open schedules.

Then there’s the dreaded online application process which pretty much feels like you’re jumping through flaming hoops over a shark tank blind folded and backwards. After you’re done you take the blind fold off to realize that the audience left half way through and the only person still in the stands is some dude reading a news paper who wasn’t paying attention anyways. Basically, you don’t feel like anyone will ever see your application and thus your likely hood of getting the job is very very slim if anything at all.

There is some upside to it. You get very good at answering silly questions about your personality, work ethics and basic reasoning capability. If ever you are stuck in a video game-like scenario where answering such questions mean that you either move on to the next level or fall into a pit full of acid you’re set. Otherwise you have acquired a useless skill that will never really serve you well.

ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED!!!!: Useless Question Answering Skill Aquired

I miss the good ol’ days when you could walk into a place and ask if they were hiring and if they were you could talk to the manager and get to know them a little and leave an impression on them before you took the application home and then brought it back after taking your time to fill it out. Now you’re just a name and a number without a face that some poor human resources person has to look at and most likely will just skim over.

There are days when I think there is too much automation in the world. How will these places that only take online applications function if the internet stops existing. I’m hoping it’s some sort of Mad Max style Thunder Dome contest because if it is I am totally getting a job. Or maybe it can be rock/paper/scissors and all those hours spent at LARP will finally pay off. Not likely but one can dream… one can dream…

Things I Don’t Get #1

This is my skeptical face.

Things I Don’t Get #1:

You ever see someone (usually a teenager) wearing a t-shirt for a band or a show or some random movie that you like and compliment them on it? Then try to ask them their opinion only to find out that they have never listened to, watched or otherwise in any way actually know what it is they are wearing on their chest?

Dose it irk you? It certainly dose me.

I get that theirs a fashion trend and maybe I was a strange child/teen but when the “wear logos on your shirt because it’s in” craze hit I sort of wanted to know what the logo on my shirt was for if I was going to wear it. No adays it seems that blind consumerism is at an all time high. I mean, when I say “Gaba gaba Hey!” To someone wearing a Ramons t-shirt I expect them to at least know why I’m doing so. Do they not feel stupid when they don’t? (psst, the answer is apparently “no” instead they just think you’re weird and old and creepy. Which is very sad.)

I personally find the fact that teens (and adults, let’s face it we do stupid things too) buy things that they don’t even have an emotional response to. It’s one thing to wear a Gwar t-shirt because you like Gwar. Hell, I can even accept “I really liked the picture” if that’s what caught your eye but to have someone say, “Well band shirts are in right now” is just… wow. Just… it hurts my brain.

I would blame Hot Topic but it’s not really their fault. I mean, they’re just the dealers. The dealers of shame and tragedy and nonsense (look at me being hypocritical while I bitch about Hot Topic on the computer while wearing skully socks I bought there)

But seriously I don’t really get why teens fall for the “because it’s in” thing. I remember trying to do so when  I was about 13 but I failed because I just wasn’t comfortable in the damn clothing. I mean, I look pretty bad in pastel’s no matter what Teen Beat says.

Of course, our teen’s role models are… um… well… Twilight movies… and Justin Beaber… and Lady Gaga (though I like her because she’s weird and unashamed of it I still don’t think teens should wear meat dresses. It’s just dangerous to do.) You know who my role modles were? Uh… Edger Allen Poe and H.P. Lovecraft… and Pin Head from Hellraiser and… you know what? I’m not a great example since all my role modles were either dead guys or creepy Brits with lavish make up on their faces. Still, I think that today’s role models for kids are kind of lame. I mean, Justin Beaber? Ew.

Well, til someone finally holds a “This is what your T-shirt is from” class I guess I’ll just have to deal with people blindly wearing things they have no clue about in the name of fashion. Well, either until then or until I take over the world and abolish such fashion trends into the Nether Pit of No Return, that is.

Nowhere Girl

A picture of me being myself. Sort of. I’m kind of a silly person. I figured it was a good thing to start with. If this doesn’t scare you nothing will.

 Hello There,

You’re probably wondering why you should read this. I wonder that myself. I could go on and on about why you would like me but really in the end it’s up to you if you do or not. So I’ll let you read and make your own decision. If you think I’m cool, awesome. If not, awesome.

See how easy I am to get along with?

Mostly I’m doing this for myself. I’m not sure what all I’ll put on this thing. I’m going to try avoiding stuff like personal drama and what I had to eat today. That’s boring. I think I’ll put some pictures of costumes up. Maybe talk about them. Maybe I’ll post some stuff about the Haunted House I work at or the LARP I play in. Maybe I’ll just tell you about some amusing observation I had.

You never can tell what I’ll post. So sit back, have a beer and enjoy the ride. Or if you don’t like beer please feel free to have the beverage of your choice.

Sincerely,

Adana
